Surgical Face Lift Provides Many Benefits & Many Side Effects

If you're considering a surgical face lift, there are many aspects of surgery you should educate yourself about, specifically the benefits and the possible side effects.

Many people who have face lifts rave about the improvement in their looks. They are pleased with the many benefits that face lift surgery can offer.

Some of these benefits include:

1. Improved facial contour - This means that some face lifts can actually rearrange the underlying contour of the face. A good surgeon can lightly and naturally tighten the skin so that the face regains its youthful contour.

2. Repairing of loose or saggy skin -- The desire to do away with sagging skin is one of the main reasons that people seek out surgical face lifts. Through the general and subtle pulling up of the skin, those who undergo face lifts find that they lose the loose or saggy skin they hoped to lose. Most surgeons these days also will contour the face gently so that the patient doesn't end up with a look that seems pulled and pinched and unnatural.

3. Tightening facial muscles - The procedure often provides a natural tightening of the skin which creates a more youthful look as well.

Of course, this surgical intervention isn't without risk. Some of the possible side effects are nothing more than an inconvenience, while others are more serious. They include:

2. Pain - This should be expected, given that you have had surgery. The amount of pain experienced differs with each patient, but usually it's enough to require a mild analgesic or something prescribed by the doctor. Anything severe or that doesn't go away often requires medical care.

3. Numbness - This could fall under the category of a simple nuisance, but it's also to be expected. Usually general numbness of the face will go away a couple of days after surgery.

4. Bruising - The bruising that's common after face lift surgery often makes the patient look like they have been in a bar fight. With bruises particularly around the eyes, those who have had a face lift often stay out of the limelight for many weeks. It can take weeks for the bruising to go away, but it usually gets at least a little better each day post-surgery.

4. Scarring - Depending on the type of face lift you get, there could be considerable or minor scarring. Sometimes the scars never go away and must be hidden by hair or makeup.

5. Medical risks - Although rare, there have been reported deaths after face lifts and other serious medical scares. Depending on the patient's previous medical condition and other medical risks, receiving the medication necessary for surgery and enduring the recovery period could be too much.

So there you have it.

As with any medical procedure, patients should always do their homework and consider any side effects. In the case of an optional surgery, dong the research is even more critical.

Since there are non surgical options for face lifts, it seems even more useful to do research beforehand to see what your options are when it comes to younger looking skin.
